Hey Luke:
Thanks for your thought provoking, passionate, and mouth watering post!
I was quite concerned about issues of nutrition while doing my first (and subsequent "serial" MC 2 & 3) ....and since then too, and posted like a maniac about it (in posts that are not easily accessible since our bb migrated). I think we live in a challenging time and place-- having to deal with the problem-- of too much food, living in a land of plenty (while many starve)-- while ironically, the food is often nutrient depleted! It sounds like you and your (growing) family-- are figuring out a whole lot about how to eat healthfully-- in these challenging times-- and I certainly hope you stay on board and tell us all about it!
Western (allopathic) medicine and standard nutritional doctrine-- are quite wary of fasting--and many such people hold that even a day without food can be quite dangerous. All this is alarming- and I read quite a bit of it during my first and subsequent MCs. On the other hand-- traditional cultures have incoroporated fasting as a way of life-- and our ancestors endured long bouts of famine, so that in many ways we are much hardier than we suppose. At the time that I was struggling with these notions-- Res also pointed out-that scary as it is to go without nutrition-- it is still only a small fraction of the year. Now since I did a total of 52+33 on my first 3 MCs within the last half year-- it is actually a SIGNIFICANT fraction of time (almost half!) but then-- when you consider again-- that traditional societies-- including my own (Greek) include fasting-- on a regular basis throughout the week, month and year-- it is not as crazy as it may seem-- particularly considering the excess-- which we may be prone too!
Now-- again-- conventional (allopathic) wisdom suggests that we need protein-- and other nutrients DAILY-- but then-- it maybe possible-- that the body-- has a mechanism for recovering nutrients-- when cells are "scavenged" during fasting. The body is a remarkable thing-- and, having done long term MCs--I was stunned and amazed to find-- how LITTLE we can subsist on-- and feel remarkably well (almost better) than when eating. My parents-- are WWII survivors-- and have reported (along with others) that during periods of famine-- many people got BETTER-- from a series of maladies. It is truly an amazing thing-- that food deprivation especially when thoughtful and deliberate-- as opposed to immorally and inappropriately imposed-- such as when the Nazis starved the Jews, in WWII.... can be amazingly healing.
I think we all have to think carefully on it. Even western medicine says that extreme caloric deprivation-- leads to amazing longevity in laboratory animals. I'm not trying to advocate such extreme (anorexic) behaviour-- which can in fact have severe consequences-- but I think the Cleanse can help us all to reconsider--exactly how much food DO WE REALLY NEED?
Best of luck to you on your and your family's journey to optimal health! Please keep us posted! Thanks,
sophie
