That's right. "nama" means raw in Japanese.
Regular Shoyu is heat-treated after pressed from fermented mixture(basically steamed soybeans, toasted and ground wheat, salt water and malted rice).
So Nama-Shoyu is not heat-treated, but its ingredients are heated.

Anyway, I think it's okay to use both in raw diet to add flavor. Noone use them as main ingredient, right? lol
And Miso is, for Japanese people, a great source of protein. That's why we have Miso soup every morning.

Going out for a night of karaoke with some friends. I had a lot of garlic today so I hope I don't kill 'em. I'm having major reoccurance of hot flashes today. I sure didn't miss THEM on the cleanse. I thought alcohol and caffeine were responsible. But, I haven't had any since I came off. So, I guess I go back to my BHRT therapy now. It's natural, so I'm not concerned about it. But I sure wish the cleanse had permanantly taken care of them.

They will all be drinking. I'm sticking to bottles water and lemon. Wish me luck!

    I eliminated. YEAH!!!!

    Go Ginger!
Enjoy the "empty orchestra" and the water with lemon...you're terrific!

Miso: right! It's made from processed, not fermented I don't think, soy and that's why it's not technically raw. Same reason raw foodists don't eat tofu (it's steamed). But all this technical stuff can drive you crazy....when the raw people, like Matt Amsden and Jen Cornbleet and Alissa Cohen have nama shoyu or Bragg's in their recipes, I'm believing that it's fine to have those things. Dr. Gabriel Cousens does not use those things because he is a purist and although I tend to be an "all or nothing" kind of girl, I don't need to make myself THAT crazy.

Meat-eater Res~ Yay! A meat-eater who's not afraid to say so!!! The only reason I gave it up is because I'm convinced that although I love any kind of beef, chicken, fish, lamb...they don't love me back and since I spent the first half of my life enjoying [I]those[I]things, I can now spend the next half of my life remembering what they taste like but eating things that love me back so I can stop worrying about becoming a diabetic, heart disease-ridden old woman. (It's in my genes). Wow, that was an awful sentence!

I don't think nama shoyu or Bragg's will ever cause diabetes or heart disease!

And pickles and kraut and all those fermented things? Right! If they're made at home and aren't processed, they're officially raw. Enjoy! In fact, kraut is one of the recommended staples of raw. Nomi Shannon has a lot to say about that and some good recipes, too.

Off to dream about almond milk and raw pizza, rosemary crackers, onion bread and cranberry scones. In fact, I almost wish it were morning so I could have breakfast! Nighty-night all!

i did enjoy it Sim, thanks

But they didn't have bottled water, and i wouldn't drink tap water. So I wound up with club soda. It tasted sweet to me. I didn't think they put sugar in there, but now I'm not sure.

My girlfriend brought a beautiful raspberry torte and chocolate chip cookies for everyone. I had the cookies sitting right in front of me and I wasn't even tempted. But when I saw that torte with a whipped cream cheese center, I thought about a little taste. BUT I DIDN'T!!!

I got up this morning and weighed. My low weight was 174, now I'm up to 177.5. I guess that's normal when one starts to eat, but I was hoping to continue to lose. Gotta cut back on those spicy almonds. I think I'm gonna start counting WW points this week to keep an eye on my intake.

For breakfast I took the celery, banana, date idea I saw, and added a handful of raisins, a little shredded coconut, and just a little of that thick almond milk from the vitamix. Deeelicious. I agree the celery is a great touch.

Sim: Like you said, even though I'm doing the 30 Day Raw (and loving it by the way) I'm not going to go berserk if I eat Braggs or use a bit of the soy. The fact that I'm even doing this is such a big deal in the first place that it makes me happy as is.

Yup, I'm a meat eater. However, I prefer veggies and fruits. Since I don't eat that much meat - I buy the good stuff from Whole Foods and really enjoy it. The difference in meat from there and the grocery store is night and day.

I posted in the 30 day thread about the "lasagna" I made last night. WOWSERS! The only "down" part at all is that I can't heat it. So eating it cold is a bit weird but honestly I can get used to it. Especially after enjoying those Cranberry scones right out of the dehydrator. Yum.

Hahaha - I'm such a push-over. After reading your last line I grabbed a glass of almond milk and two scones.

Hi all, I'm new to the raw foods board, fresh off the Cleanse board. I'm on day 5 post-cleanse and so far so good. The first day was super rough (tummy ache all night long) but now I seem to be able to eat most fruits and veggies with no problem. The bad news is that I have the flu, thanks to my boyfriend who came back from out of town on the day before I broke the fast. I wish I had still been cleansing because I might have dodged the bullet, but I suspect that since my body was having a hard enough time dealing with the new foods I was giving it, my defenses were down.

Anyway, I am a big fan of raw garlic when I'm sick but I'm just wondering if it's too soon. I had some guacamole the other night with onions and garlic and it caused my tongue to have a really uncomfortable (and gross-looking) reaction. Normally I just chop up the garlic and swallow it with water, no chewing, but I'm worried that's more than my little stomach can handle right now. Thoughts?

I'm on day 8 of my first cleanse and I'm planning for my new diet. I'm wondering if I should buy a juicer, blender or both... any suggestions?

I personally would start with the blender. I don't juice much any more because I don't want to throw out the fiber. I much prefer smoothies, which use whole fruits and veggies.

If you want to eat all raw or almost all raw, and you have money, then a really powerful blender like the Vita-mix is a great way to go. However, if money is an object, then any ordinary blender will get you going and will probably be fine for quite a while.

You can then add in other things as you can afford them and as they appeal to your "style" at the time.

The next thing I'd add is a food processor, then a dehydrator.

    Have fun!
