Hello everyone!
My love, Isabelle, and I have been gearing up for our first cleanse and we are really excited. The date we chose to begin is December 26th! What a way to ring in the new year, huh? Puts a whole new spin on "praying to the porcelin god". Jokes aside...we do believe its a great way to "start" anew.
We got thrown a curve ball though about a week ago when we found out we are pregnant!
Now, I have read this thread and understand the strong view points. And I have read other threads where the same view was expressed, and where alternatives were given as suggested nutrition during the 9 months of pregnancy.
I still have this question (I can be a mule sometimes!)...which I will get to shortly, please bear with me.
We are in what we think is the 4th week. Going to the doctor Friday to find out all particulars. From research it seems that the developing embryo during the first 5 weeks may be autonomous enough still to be protected from toxins passing through.
Now, I propose this question here as part of my fact finding and as one of hopefully several sources of guidance to come. Any help and insight would be very much appreciated!
Question: (or questions)
When doing the cleanse, are the toxins pumped back into the blood stream as part of the expulsion? Or are they confined to be passed through the waste tract (and sweat glands?)? Where do they essentially go on their way out?
If the toxins do not return to and through the bloodstream, would the embryo in the first month be sort of shielded or simply unrelated to the activity elsewhere? So, the question becomes...Can it possibly be safe for a pregnant woman to cleanse within the first month, but not again till after nursing? When would be the strict cut off time, if you were to stop and really think about it?
We can't help but feel the even greater importance of detoxing now that we have this little being taking shape. My love's diet has been a mix of healthy and regular. She likes here coffee, her whole milk ice cream, her sugar, and occassional processed badness. But we have been working on more organic whole foods and veggies, quinua and kale, water, fruit. We still have alot to learn and our diet is still, in my opinion, far from where we want to be. I am just relating I guess that Is's diet is not the full on typical american diet. Just a few aspects of it mixed with healthy change.
I am a scientific person by nature. I hate to say it gang, but I am going to need some convincing and not just a "NO!NEVER!NADA!NUNCA!".
Thank you.
Happy Holidays.
and peace to you all.

Hi Opus and congratulations!!
Perhaps someone more "scientific" will come along and convince youbut I would say 'err on the side of caution'. Especially when dealing with a new little life. So much energy and activity is going into "forming" your baby in these early stages that I would say, 'no'. Yeah I know - nothing scientific yet but now I want to track it down and find out for myself whether or not it really is safe.
I'll see what I can come up with. We have quite a few people in the medical field and scientists on the board so hopefully they'll shed some light.
Again congratulations!
Love,

Okay, so this is a bit random but check it out;
Should a pregnant or nursing woman do internal cleansing?
Internal cleansing/detoxification is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. A fetus or newborn baby should not be exposed to the toxins eliminated from the mother’s body while cleansing. The mother should wait until her baby is weaned completely.
There's one....still searching.

Like you, I was very concerned about what harm could have been done to my little growing baby. I am happy to say that absolutely no harm was done. At such an early stage in pregnancy the baby needs so little from you so it was not being deprived of nutrients and because the cleanse was cut short I don't think many toxins were passed as well.
I wish you the very best! My little guy is now 13 months and I'm just getting ready to try the cleanse again.
Hey there, I'm an attachement parent who practices self led weaning in her children. My youngest is 2 and a half and still nursing and I have decided to do a 10 day cleanse anyway. He doesn't nurse that much anymore and gets the majority of his nutrition from food...so I'm not going to worry about it.
However, I wouldn't nurse a child who was getting the majority of their nutrition from breastmilk.
I think you'll be fine. I had a friend who did a 20-day cleanse while still nursing. Her doctor had done the cleanse and thought it would be OK, and her child was over a year old. She didn't have any problems.Originally Posted by doulamama

i've cleansed while nursing (twice when my daughter was 1-2 years old). i did 21-days each time, she nursed a bit & is/was fine.
i would never cleanse & nurse a newborn -- but a toddler seems okay.
just fyi
