    Default gout

i'm experiencing a gouty flare up, swollen joint on big toe, (classical symptom)
i went off my med, allapurinol, for the cleanse. the last time i did mc i was ok. i also read some where that the MC cleared up some elses gout.

the mc is low in purines so thats not causiing it. i'm pretty its the break down of body tissue (primarily muscle or lean tissue) that is causing it. because a a by product of protein synthesis is uric acid which causes the gout.

any suggestions? i'd hate to go back on the anti inflamatory drug, indomethacin, its pretty toxic.

I'm on Day 5 of my 1st MC. Yesterday I had a nasty gout attack and I'm in wicked pain today as well. I'm assuming that this is a detox symptom, but a search of this BB didn't show many results or info for "gout".

I am simply going to have to resort to taking the indomethacin to releive this since I can barely walk. Not happy about it.

An interesting thing about this flare up is that I got the swelling in BOTH big toes, which has never happened before.

I'm hoping that this really is just a detox symptom and that when it passes I won't have these attacks again.

Anyone else with any gout experiences while on the MC?

Did you have any success with the gout during MC? I am new to this and am planning to start my first MC tonight together with my wife. I have gout and take the indomethacin, which is really nasty as you know. I am hoping this will make the gout situation better not worse.

I was wondering if anyone has been on this gout thing. I went to day 13 and I was having a lot of pain due to the gout. I finally succumbed and had some of the meds but i was taking them on an empty stomach and you really need to protect your belly with food if you take indomethecin. So I slowly weaned myself off the cleanse so I could take some of the meds. I wanted to continue the cleanse and I want to start another round soon.
But I would like to find some solution to this issue. I read here that a doctor mentioned that fast weight reduction can cause a flare up of gout. I also wonder if the cleanse sort of knocks up the uric acid in the body. I don't know but I would like to figure it out.

The gout attack is caused by the rapid weight loss. Additional uric acid is released into the bloodstream as your body processes the fat in your body.

My wife and I started the MC today and this is one of my biggest concerns, so I'm trying to decide whether to take my meds for the gout through out the cleanse. I won't be drinking any alcohol so I'm hoping that will be enough to prevent an attack, but I doubt it.

My meds, these days, consist of just ibuprofen -- but a lot of it. From what I've read, 4 pills (800 mg) taken 4 times per day, is the recommended dose during an attack. I've taken a lot more than that when I've felt one coming on and have actually prevented it from going full bore the next day.

So, I'm thinking I'll take a maintenance regimen of 400mg 4 times daily and hope that keeps the extra uric acid released during the MC at bay. I'll try to report back my experience.

FWIW, I stopped the gout attack before it got bad about a week ago, and had another attack about two months ago which I also stopped in a couple of days with ibuprofen. Hopefully the MC will leave me in better shape and I won't have to go through this again.

    Keep us posted Cab.

Dr Mercola has some great articles and info on treating gout without drugs. I'm absolutely not telling you to stop taking meds. Here's a few things he stated:

"Between two and five million Americans suffer from gout, a type of arthritis that causes stiff, swollen and painful joints. It occurs when your uric acid levels build up in your blood. Although gout is commonly blamed on eating high-purine foods such as organ meats, there is clearly another dietary culprit: high fructose corn syrup." <-- this is followed by a video on his website www.mercola.com and type "gout" in the search feature.

"Men who drink two or more sugary soft drinks a day have an 85 percent higher risk of gout than those who drink less than one a month, according to U.S. and Canadian researchers.
Gout has been increasing steadily in the UK in recent years, and the researchers believe it is linked to a rise in soft drink consumption over the same period.
During the 12-year study, 46,000 men aged 40 and over were asked questions about their diet.
The risk of developing gout significantly increased among men who drank five to six servings of sugary soft drinks a week. Fruit juice and fructose-rich fruits such as oranges and apples also increased the risk.
Gout causes painful, swollen joints, usually in your lower limbs, caused when uric acid crystallizes out of your blood into your joints.
Fructose is known to inhibit the excretion of uric acid, which may help to explain the study’s findings."

Mercola's Comments: Natural Tips for Treating Gout

Gout can be extremely painful but there are some natural solutions that can help.

    1. Find out your nutritional type. This will tell you what foods your body needs to thrive, including whether or not you should be eating high-purine foods or not.

    2. Avoid drinking soda, fruit juice and other sweet beverages. Instead, drink plenty of pure water, as the fluids will help to remove uric acid from your body.

    3. Limit the alcohol you drink (or eliminate it altogether). Alcohol may raise the levels of uric acid in your blood.

    4. Exercise. Being overweight increases your risk of gout, and regular exercise will help you to maintain a healthy weight.

    5. Try tart cherries, or concentrated tart cherry juice. Tart cherries contain two powerful compounds, anthocyanins and bioflavonoids. Both of these compounds slow down the enzymes Cyclo-oxyygenase-1 and -- 2, which helps to relieve and prevent arthritis and gout in your body."
