I Have A Female Friend, Age 70, Who Did The Master Cleanse For 10 Days. She Was On The First Day Of Soup And Had A Severe Seizure At 2 Am. Her Doctor Says The Seizure Was Caused By A Loss Of Electrolytes Caused By The Master Cleanse.
Has Anyone Else Heard Of A Similar Experience? What Can Be Done To Avoid This Very Frightening Event? I Feel Badly For Introducing My Friend To This Diet.
I'm sorry this happened to your friend. I have epilepsy, and 4 years ago had one of the worst seizures of my life following a severe electrolyte imbalance. I'm happy to say that in 3 MCs I have had no problems with seizures. It's one of the reasons I do the MC.
Does your friend have a history of seizures? Or did she have a health issue that would have lowered her electrolyte levels? Either way, I wouldn't recommend that she repeat a cleanse. As much success as I have had on the MC, it's not worth the risk for her.
Maggieslp: Thank you for your response. She has no history of seizures; she reports elevated cholesterol and borderline diabetes. Other than that, she's a good weight, has an orchard and a garden she tends, is generally healthy and active. The doctor told her she could do it 1 day from time to time.
Seizures can be caused by many, many things. Even electrolyte imbalances have a variety of causes. Pharmaceutical drugs can can electrolyte imbalances. It many not have been due to the MC, but to other factors.
I have an update for my original post: My female friend had another seizure about 6 weeks ago and after several medical tests, found out she has a cyst in her brain, which her docs now say caused the seizures.
I have a question that is directly related to this Thread. I will be beginning the Master Cleanse. I have basically read all 3 books: (Peter Gickman's, Stanley' Burrough's and Tom Woloshyn's).
Now I take an anti-convulsant medication for Epilepsy. However, I have been seizure free for some time now. So I am wondering if I am at a risk and should avoid the MC?
I will continue to take my medication on the MC.
Any tips?
hi toronto_girl! just curious if you ever had a response to your question...
my roommate wants to do the Master Cleanse, but he's on Depakote for his seizures. in Feb of 2008 he had a few in one day and then a one-off in May. they seem to occur after he binge drinks if he doesn't take care of himself/his electrolytes and in times when he exerts himself physically (exercise) and mentally (stress).
i'm psyched that he wants to detox his body since he's had a lifetime of bodily abuse from his party lifestyle, but i'm worried that a seizure could set him back mentally, as he has a tough time recovering from his seizures.
any tips/advice would greatly be appreciated. thanks!
I'm back to do another cleanse, and see that this thread is active. I have done multiple cleanses without having any seizures while on the MC. I took a long break from cleansing though because I was having a lot of seizures due to too low levels of aeds. I take Lamictal and Dilantin and am finally stable enough in seizure control to do the MC again.
I would advise not doing the Cleanse if you are currently having seizures. If you are stable and you feel it is the right choice for you, there does not seem to be any problems with electrolyte balance. I would NOT recommend going off your anti seizure medication.
Keep us updated!
One of the reasons I was so impressed with the Master Cleanse
was because of the nutritional profile of the lemon, maple syrup
and the pepper. I wonder if the average person gets this many
electrolytes from their average diet. I kinda don't think so!
In Burroughs book, he does a chemical/nutritional breakdown
of all the components. If you haven't seen it, you will be impressed.
