    Fasting 101 – health benefits of water/ juice fasting

    * Fasting is the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food and in some cases drink, for a period of time. Depending on the tradition, fasting practices may forbid sexual intercourse, masturbation, as well as refraining from eating certain types or groups of food (e.g. meat). Medical fasting can be a way to promote detoxification. – more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting

    * "Fasting is, without any doubt, the most effective biological method of treatment... it is the 'operation without surgery'... it is a cure involving exudation, reattunement, redirection, loosening up and purified relaxation. While fasting, the patient improves her or his physical health and gains much. But he or she will have neglected the most important thing if the hunger for spiritual nourishment that manifests itself during fasting is not satisfied." said Otto Buchinger, Sr., M.D., Germany's great, self-described "fasting therapist," who founded the most famous of several renowned, European Buchinger Kliniks in 1952. --- more info at http://www.healingdaily.com/juicing-...th/fasting.htm

    * Benefits of fasting
    1. Fasting initiates rapid weight loss with little or no hunger. Most people are surprised at how little desire for food they have while fasting.

    2. Fasting promotes detoxification. As the body breaks down its fat reserves, it mobilizes and eliminates stored toxins.

    3. Fasting gives the digestive system a much-needed rest. After fasting, both digestion and elimination are invigorated.

    4. Fasting promotes the resolution of inflammatory processes, such as in rheumatoid arthritis.

    5. Fasting quiets allergic reactions, including asthma and hay fever.

    6. Fasting promotes the drying up of abnormal fluid accumulations, such as edema in the ankles and legs and swelling in the abdomen.

    7. Fasting corrects high blood pressure without drugs. Fasting will normalize blood pressure in the vast majority of cases, the blood pressure will remain low after the fast, if the person follows a health-supporting diet and lifestyle.

    8. Fasting makes it easy to overcome bad habits and addictions. Many people have overcome tobacco and alcohol addictions by fasting, and even drug addictions. Fasting rapidly dissipates the craving for nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and other drugs.

    9. Fasting clears the skin and whitens the eyes. It is common to see skin eruptions clear while fasting, and the whites of the eyes never look so clear and bright as they do after fasting.

    10. Fasting restores taste appreciation for wholesome natural foods. People say that their taste buds come alive after fasting and that food never tasted so good.

    11. Fasting is the perfect gateway to a healthful diet and lifestyle. Going on a fast gives you the motivation and enthusiasm to make a fresh start.

    * general things to understand about the master cleanse

    1. Understand that the theory behind this fast is that lemon and lime juice, while high in vitamin C, potassium and other minerals, are also astringent, which causes tissue in your body to contract, squeezing out toxins stored deep within.

    2. Realize that this fast is also designed to help your body eliminate much of your old fatty tissue, at an average rate of 2 pounds a day, with a very low risk of negative side effects. This prepares your body to build new fatty tissue. Many of the toxins stored in the old fatty tissue are also released during this fast through the usage and breakdown of the tissue.

    3. Keep in mind that people also believe this fast eliminates and dissolves accumulated mucus throughout your body, helping to clear up the flu, asthma, hay fever, sinus or bronchial troubles, as well as colds and various allergies harbored within mucus. Cholesterol deposits in your arteries and veins also respond well to the intense cleansing power of lemon juice and cayenne pepper.

    4. Realize that in addition to the cleaning powers of the ingredients of this fast, in general, juice fasting flushes your system with large amounts of liquid, allows your digestive organs to rest, and reduces the fermentation activity in your internal organs by supplying very little sugar or starch to your body.

    5. Understand that, because all the foods that most of your internal organs are constantly striving to filter, process and digest are eliminated, all of your organs are given a chance to rejuvenate themselves.

    * Other Aspects of Healthy Fasting

    • Fresh air—plenty is needed to support cleansing and oxygenation of the cells and tissues.

    • Sunshine—also needed to revitalize our body; avoid excessive exposure.

    • Water—bathing is very important to cleanse the skin at least twice daily. Steams and saunas are also good for giving warmth as well as supporting detoxification.

    • Skin brushing—with a dry, soft brush prior to bathing; this will help clear toxins from the skin. This is a good year-round practice as well.

    • Exercise—very important to support the cleansing process. It helps to relax the body, clear wastes, and prevent toxicity symptoms. Walking, bicycling, swimming, or other usual exercises can usually be done during a fast, although more dangerous or contact sports might be avoided.

    • No drugs except mandatory prescription drugs. Particularly, avoidance of alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine is wise.

    • Vitamin supplements—these are not used during fasting.
    [I edited this posting to elminate the mention of taking vitamins or other supplements during the Master Cleanse. A great part of the power of the Master Cleanse comes from fasting--not eating any solid food or supplement. As pointed out by Joel Fuhrman, MD, in his book "Fasting and eating for Health," fasting allows the body to begin to eliminate fat, waste, toxins and other unwanted tissues. This is not a colon cleanse where you take substances designed to push waste out of only the colon. Stanley Burroughs, the developer of the Master Cleanse points out that toxins, fat and wastes from throughout the body--including the liver, kidneys and other vital organs--are being eliminated. It reduces the effectiveness of the Master Cleanse to add substances to be eaten. Peter ]

    • Work and be creative—and make plans for your life. Staying busy is helpful in breaking our ties to food. We also need time for ourselves. Most fasters experience greater work energy and more creativity and, naturally, find lots to do.

    • Cleanup—a motto during fasting. As we clean our body, we want to clean our room, desk, office, closet, and home—just like "spring cleaning." It clearly brings us into harmony with the cleansing process of nutrition. If we want to get ready for the new, we need to make space by clearing out the old.

    • Joining others in fasting can generate strong bonds and provide an added spiritual lift. It opens up new supportive relationships and new levels of existing ones. It will also provide support if we feel down or want to quit. Most people feel better as their fast progresses—more vital, lighter, less blocked, more flexible, clearer, and more spiritually attuned. For many, it is nice to have someone with whom to share this. Call our clinic or another that offers this service.

    • Avoid the negative influence of others who may not understand or support us. There are many fears and misconceptions about fasting, and they may affect us. We need to listen to our own inner guidance and not to others’ limitations, but we also need to maintain awareness and insight into any problems should they arise. Being in contact with fasters will provide us with the positive support we need.

    • The economy of fasting allows us to save time, money, and future health care costs. While we may be worried about not having enough, we may already have too much. Many of us are inspired to share more of ourselves when we are freed from food.

    • Meditation and relaxation are also an important aspect of fasting to help attune us to deeper levels of ourselves and clear the stresses that we have carried with us.

    • Spiritual practice and prayer will affirm our positive attitude toward ourselves and life in general. This supports our meditation and relaxation and provides us with the inner fuel to carry on our life with purpose and passion.

    ----taken from: http://www.healthy.net/scr/article.asp?ID=1996#6

    Fasting is a period of abstinence from all food or specific items. Fluids are consumed in sufficient quantity to satisfy thirst and physiologic requirements. During the absence of food, the body will systematically cleanse itself of everything except vital tissue.

    Nearly everyone who fasts, discovers the same thing, that when they fast they actually have no hunger and more energy than they normally have. It is indeed liberating to find out that if we let go and trust that we will be taken care of. Fasting is the simplest, easiest and most effective way to find out that we do indeed have the power and freedom to heal and take control of our bodies

    Before you start a cleanse
    You can start whenever you’re mentally prepared and well-informed. It’s important to know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and what to expect before embarking on such a deep journey that affects not only body, but mind and spirit.

    1. Read Stanley Burroughs’ book. Add Peter’s for supplementary information.

    2. Research. On this site and other sites. Many people have blogged about their experiences. Your experience may not be the same as theirs but it helps to hear success (and failure) stories to learn what to look out for.

    3. Make sure you have the time to dedicate to this. 13 full days without social obligations that my tempt you. (13 days because 10 days of fasting and 3 days of breaking the fast)

    4. Gather all the ingredients and get rid of tempting foods you have. Donate them. Trash them. Have someone hide or hold them for you.

    5. Some people do a week of eating vegetarian, vegan or raw before starting the cleanse. Some people have a big feast the night before. It’s really up to you. It is highly recommended to wean yourself off alcohol, coffee and soda before starting the cleanse because withdrawal symptoms can be brutal.

    6. The first 3 days are generally the hardest. Starting the cleanse on a Friday night helps give you the weekend to get through the roughest parts and to sleep and rest as you need to. Drink the tea on Friday night, do the salt water flush on Saturday and start with the lemonade. That way by Monday, you’ll be in the groove of things as your body and mind start to adjust to fasting.

    7. Don’t plan too much for the first day. Just rest when you need to. Drink as much lemonade as you need. Don’t decrease the amount of maple syrup just yet, you will be hungrier the first few days and need all the energy you can get. (Don’t worry about losing weight, it will come whether or not you decrease the maple syrup. It’s more important to have energy and not be hungry)

    8. Set milestones through the cleanse. Schedule a massage for day 7 or 8. Reward yourself with little things like a shopping trip, a manicure/ pedicure, soaking your feet, go to the movies or rent a bunch, sleep late, veg out in front of the t.v., go somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, spend time with family or friends, volunteer and the list is endless.

    9. Don’t be afraid about what could happen or what might happen. Do your research so you know what to expect and what may happen and be prepared for anything. Remember that you are doing something good for your body, and after years of mistreating it (and you know you have mistreated it) it deserves some down time to rest and heal. Don’t sell yourself short without trying.

    Preparing for a fast

    --Inform yourself about fasting: by doing your own investigation, reading all you can about the fasting process, the various kinds of fasts and what you can expect as side affects. If you have a pre-existing health condition then you should find out if there are contrary indications with fasting and your condition. Determine your cleanse duration and time period: Try to arrange that your fast is in a time period where you have low activity or lobsters. Avoid heavy kinds of work if at all possible. When it comes to long fasts and inability of somebody to handle a long fast, you just do the best you can. When detoxification increases as it does during fasting, the liver, kidneys, lungs and immune system work extra hard to handle the load. If these systems were already compromised before the fast, one must proceed carefully. You go as long as you can tolerate it, whether physiologically or emotionally, and then come back to eating again. Once you have some energy and are a few steps further toward health, you can consider doing another fast. Several short fasts can definitely do wonders if one long fast cannot be undertaken. Long fasts are preferable to short ones because once the body is in the fasting state it cleanses systematically into the harder to get at body tissues. For this reason, most of the recoveries from illness have taken place in the latter parts of long juice or water fasts. Long fasts give the body the uninterrupted time to do the work of healing. The first few days of fasting gets rid of the gross waste products of digestion, but only after this can the body pull out its tools to get to work on healing. ---http://www.falconblanco.com/health/fasting.htm#Preparation%20for%20Your%20Fast

    Preparation: If you are not prepared both mentally and physically you will find it difficult to go one day without food. The mental preparation is simple, but very important. The night before the fast you have to take a firm determination that tomorrow you are going to fast, that you are not going to eat any food. If you fix your mind in advance then you will not start deliberating during the fasting day whether you should continue or not to continue. If you are undecided or waffling you can always find a hundred reasons why you should start eating.
    Physical preparation is also important. The day before you fast you should eat a normal amount of food and take a good amount of liquids (especially if you are going to be fasting without taking any liquids). If you miss some meals on the day before fasting, then you may start feeling hungry during the fasting period. If you do not take enough liquids, especially during the night before the fast, then you will feel uncomfortable when you are fasting.
    If you are physically and mentally prepared you will not feel very hungry while you are fasting. Once you decide to fast, your hunger just "shuts off" for the fasting period. This sounds hard to believe, but if you do it a few times you will see that it is true.
    ---http://www.emaxhealth.com/69/881.html

    • STEP 1: Educate yourself as much as you can about the fasting technique you are going to use.
    • STEP 2: Write down all the instructions for your fast and organize a plan and schedule on paper before you begin. This is important because once the fast begins, you might try to convince yourself to quit. The schedule can then act as a contract you have made with the fast that you must keep. Remind youself why you are doing the fast and remember that it is important.
    • STEP 3: Taper off your addictions in the days prior to your fast. Cut down on caffeine, salt, sugar etc. If you cut them off all of a sudden, expect to experience headaches, stomachaches and a general feeling of discomfort.
    • STEP 4: Begin eating smaller meals prior to your fast. Resist the temptation to eat a big "last supper" the night before the fast. Cutting down your meals a few days before signals your mind, stomach, and appetite for the fast.
    • STEP 5: Gather everything you need for your fast before you begin ----http://www.ehow.com/how_12684_prepare-body-fast.html
    Days before the Fast
    • Stop eating foods with high caffeine and sugar content.
    • Begin drinking more water than usual.
    The Day before the Fast
    • Eat something small every two hours (nosh).
    • Avoid foods with caffeine and salt.
    • Drink plenty of water.
    The Meal before the Fast
    • Plan the menu of this final meal so that it contains high carbohydrate and low salt foods.
    • Sit down for the final meal before the fast at least an hour before the fast begins so there is no rush to eat quickly.
    • Do not eat too much in the meal before the fast, but drink plenty of water.
    • Leave time after the meal and before the fast to drink warm water with sugar and brush teeth.

    Who should and should not cleanse
    Fasting is not for everybody.

    • Pregnant and Nursing Mothers Should Not Do the MC
    Since the Master Cleanse is a detoxifying cleanse, it mobilizes toxins in the body. Pregnant and nursing mothers run the risk of these toxins going into their infants.

    Although one nursing mother did have an ingenious solution to this problem. She pumped enough breast milk in advance to feed her infant while she was on the cleanse and coming off it.

    Then while on the cleanse and coming off it, she pumped her breast milk and threw it out. So, there was no possibililty of passing toxins to her infant. – Peter
    http://therawfoodsite.com/forum/showthread.php?t=646

    • Chemotherapy patients should not do the MC
    Chemotherapy chemicals are extremely toxic. (After all, their purpose is to kill the cancer cells.)

    No one on chemotherapy should attempt the Master Cleanse while on chemo. After chemotherapy, such people should seek the advise of their licensed health care practitioner before starting the Master Cleanse.

    Peter
    http://therawfoodsite.com/forum/showthread.php?t=645

    • People recovering from surgery should not do the MC
    The body requires much more protein when it is healing from surgery or otherwise rebuilding flesh. Therefore, until a person is recovered, she or he should not do the Master cleanse.

    Peter http://therawfoodsite.com/forum/showthread.php?t=644

    Who shouldn't try juice fasting

    * It is important to consult a qualified health professional before trying a juice fast.

    * Pregnant or nursing women and children should not try a juice fast.

    * People with diabetes, low blood sugar, eating disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, addictions, underweight, anemia, impaired immune function, gout, asthma, infection, nutritional deficiency, low blood pressure, ulcerative colitis, cancer, terminal illness, epilepsy, or other chronic conditions should only fast under strict medical supervision.

    * People should not try juice fasts before or after surgical procedures.

    * Fasting can reduce blood proteins and change the way prescription drugs react in the body.

    People taking prescription medications should consult a health professional skilled in detoxification before trying a juice fast, and should never discontinue or reduce their medications on their own. Taken from http://altmedicine.about.com/od/deto...ce_fasting.htm

    People with life-threatening conditions should not fast, especially those who are emaciated due to cancer, TB, or AIDS. Both Type I and Type II diabetics should be under supervision if they decide to fast, but it is not recommended. Pregnant women, infants, and those with kidney failure are discouraged from fasting. Anyone who takes prescribed medication should avoid fasting because of unpredictable reactions. People with liver disease and anaemia should avoid long fasts. http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psycho...ology/fast.htm

    Who should take it easy, why and how to take it easy

    People with lots of toxins need to take it easy at first. If you mobilize lots of toxins and don't eliminate enough, you will feel awful.

    Here are indicators that you might need to take it easy:
    1. Seriously overweight - The body stores toxins in fat cells when it runs out of room in the liver. Serious overweight indicates there may be lots of toxins and waste to eliminate.
    2. Multiple-year history of medical drugs - Antibiotics every few years for infections are probably not much to worry about. Sleeping pills every night for ten years is another situation. If you are on, or have had, heavy psych drugs, chemotherapy, etc. you should definitely check with your health professional.
    3. Allergic to many things - Alternative medicine equates allergies with toxic reactions. If you are only allergic to bananas, that's probably not too serious. If you are allergic to 15 things, you need to take it easy.
    http://therawfoodsite.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79

    For those people who have decided they should take it easy, I recommend the following:
    1. Drink only the minimum 6 drinks of lemonade each day.
    2. Be sure to drink the herbal laxative tea every evening.
    3. Drink at least 1 oz. of water or lemonade for each 2 lbs of your body weight each day. (Don't drink more than 6 lemonades a day.)
    4. Be sure to do the salt water flush as given each morning.
    5. Take long, soaking hot baths to draw out toxins.
    6. Immediately discontinue the Master Cleanse if any detox symptoms do not disappear or lessen with the next day's eliminations.
    7. Then eat fresh raw vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds for a month or so. (Even then, you may have to eat some cooked rice or bread to slow down the detox.)
    The reasoning behind the recommendations above is to detoxify very lightly, but use the maximum amount of elimination methods so that whatever toxins are mobilized are quickly eliminated before being reabsorbed. Remember, you can do the Master Cleanse several times. So, do not push it.

    Taking Medication

    In his original book on the Master Cleanse, Stanley Burroughs says not to take vitamins or supplements while on the cleanse. He also talks about increased health from the Master Cleanse and eating a healthy vegetarian diet as reducing or eliminating the need for medicines, hospitals and/or nursing homes. He does not say don't take any medicines while on the Master Cleanse. However, many people misunderstand and wonder whether they can take medicines.
    Anything prescribed by a licensed health care practitioner should not be discontinued while on the Master Cleanse without consulting that licensed health care practitioner or another, if you want a second opinion. As to whether the Master Cleanse might cause problems for a current prescription, your best reference is the licensed health care practitioner who prescribed it.
    As your health improves, you may find that you need less of a prescription. For example, it is well known that fasting lowers blood pressure. If you are taking a prescription for high blood pressure, you may discover that you no longer need as much or any of that prescription during or after the Master Cleanse. Again, you should make your licensed health care practitioner aware of what is happening. So, she can adjust your prescription. Anything you are taking on your own decision, such as over the counter drug store items, should be discontinued while on the Master Cleanse. - Peter

    Make sure you take them at least an hour after finishing your SWF.

    Do not take any over the counter or not prescribed medication, pain killers or supplements while on the cleanse.

    See the section on natural remedies for other solutions.

    Hypoglycmia and Diabetes

    People with hypoglycemia and diabetes can do the cleanse but should take it easy. It helps to make sure you always have lemonade handy and sip it consistently through out the day.

    Burroughs has specific instructions to diabetics in his book.
    He recommends using molasses instead of maple syrup.
    Please see page 12 of his book for more details.

    Stocking up for the Cleanse
    Where to find – all items besides Lemons are available from the web store. You can also check Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, GNC, local health stores.

    For about ten days of cleansings, here’s an idea of how much you will need:
    1 bottle of cayenne
    1 bottle/ bag of sea salt
    30 to 60 lemons at 3 or 4 lemons a day, hoping that each lemon yields 4 tbs (2 servings of lemonade) each. 30 lemons should be enough for 6 glasses of lemonade a day.
    X gallons of spring water (for lemonades, swf and for drinking)
    1 box of laxative tea (generally has 16 – 19 tea bags)

    To cut down costs, buy in bulk. Refill gallon bottles at the water machines that some supermarkets have for less than ½ the cost of a new gallon.
    However, be careful buying lemons in bulk as the organic ones go bad very quickly. Keep them refrigerated until the night before you are going to use them. Then only take out the amount you need for that day.

    What to stock up on and why

    Lemons
    Organic is best but conventionally grown is okay, just do not use the rind. Limes are also ok if you’d prefer. You can mix lemon and lime in a drink or alternate between lemonades and limeades.

    Only use fresh squeezed Lemon Juice.

    Do not make your lemonade the night before
    . The enzymes in the lemon juice die over time and the cayenne gets hotter the longer it sits.

    If you have to make a lot of lemonade for the day and can’t make each glass fresh, mix the lemon, water and maple syrup in a bottle and pour each glass separately and add the cayenne accordingly.
    Some keep all the ingredients separate until they are making a glass which means squeezing the lemon juice into an air tight container, and bring ms and water separately or together, then mixing them when they are ready for a glass.

    When you can, freshly made lemonade is the best.

    Maple Syrup
    Make sure it is 100% pure ORGANIC Maple syrup. Non-organic sometimes uses formaldehyde pellets and you don’t want that. There are different brands with different tastes, so try to find one you like.
    Grade B dark is the best. But Grade A is okay if that’s all you can find.

    If you cant find or don’t like maple syrup, try –
    Cane juice
    Raw agave nectar
    Molasses

    Non- iodized sea salt
    You can find this in your local supermarket’s salt section. Make sure it says “not a source of iodine”
    Celtic Gray Sea Salt is highly recommended because of the mild taste.

    * Bottled Water
    Spring water. Reverse Osmosis water. Avoid tap water and flourinated water.

    * Laxative Tea
    Any tea where the main ingredient is Senna. You can usually find them in the health section of your grocery store or in a health food store. It doesn't matter what the ingredients are as long as the main one is senna. You can also use senna leaves.

    Popular brands are Yogi Get Regular, Traditional Medicine’s Smooth Move, Easy Going Colon Clean Herb Tea http://www.healthkingenterprise.com/...ygoing_tea.asp and Laxative Tea. Dieter’s teas available at health stores and Asian markets.

    Dependency issues and warnings – this isn’t a big problem here because it’s such a limited period of time. People who have cleansed for 20 to 50 days have not experienced any issues or problems due to the laxative tea.

    This is covered more later in this thread.

    * Peppermint Tea
    Burroughs recommends the ocassional glass of peppermint tea to help deal with bad breath.
    We interpret "ocassional" to mean less than once a day.

    * Baby Wipes
    To use in the bathroom. It really helps with the SWF

    * Measuring spoons and cups
    It’s very important to use the correct measurement of lemon juice. You can adjust the amount of water, cayenne and maple syrup to taste but each glass should have 2 tbs of lemon juice.

    *Probiotics
    This is not a mandatory ingredient but is recommended for after the cleanse.
    Any brand you prefer is fine. The Daily-Dophilus brand is recommended because it’s vegetarian.
    Take them based off the directions on the package as long as you like or until they are done.

    why REAL (fresh) lemon juice is better than premade bottled lemon juice

    Here's the scoop on the juices:

    Processed Juices

    * Bottle juice is pasteurized and the nutrients are depleted.
    * Juices made from imported produce may carry traces of banned pesticides.
    * Juices from fruit concentrates do not contain the whole fruits and they may be nothing more than sugar water -- possibly made with chemicals in water from industrial sites.
    * Acids from juices can leech metal from cans, causing canned juice to spoil.
    * Wax and other chemicals found in juice containers can taint the juice.
    * Shrink-wrapped juice cartons come under high heat that depletes enzymes in juice.

    Natural Juices made at home
    Natural juices contain all the vitamins, minerals, fluids, enzymes, amino acids and chlorophyll (with no toxic additives) found in raw vegetables - thereby helping the body by:

    * Promoting growth and development
    * Assisting with digestion
    * Providing energy
    * Protecting against oxidation
    * Renewing cells
    * Enriching Blood

    thanks for the info Res.

    Maple Syrup

    http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...spice&dbid=115

    Make sure it is 100% pure ORGANIC Maple syrup.
    Grade B dark is the best. But Grade A is okay if that’s all you can find.

    According to Burroughs
    The maple syrup is a balanced form of positive and negative sugar and must be used, not some “substitute.” There are three grades of maple syrup. Grade A is the first run—mild in taste, sweet and with fewer minerals than the other grades. It is more expensive and less desirable but it may be used. Grade B is the second run with more minerals plus more maple taste. It is more suitable for the diet and is less expensive. Grade C is the third run with even more minerals and still stronger taste of maple and slightly less pleasant for most people, although acceptable in the diet. It is lower in price. As Grade C is less expensive it can be used as an excellent sweetening agent in preparing foods. The strong maple flavor blends very well. The maple syrup has a large variety of minerals and vitamins. Naturally the mineral and vitamin content will vary according to the area where the trees grow and the mineral content in the soil. These are the minerals found in average samples of syrup from Vermont: Sodium; Potassium; Calcium; Magnesium; Manganese; Iron; Copper; Chlorine and Silicon. Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, Nicotinic acid and Pantothenic Acid are also present in the syrup. Information on the need and effect of these properties will be found in the Biochemistry in the back of the book, “Healing for the Age of Enlightenment.”

    “Syrup is divided, for commercial purposes, into five different grades of color. Color is one of the chief factors in grading maple syrup. The lighter the syrup, usually the more delicately flavored.

    Government grading stipulates that the syrup be maple-sap, free from foreign material, and of a density of 66 degrees Brix hydrometer reading (66% sugar). It should possess a characteristic maple flavor, should be clean, free from fermentation, and free from damage caused by scorching, buddiness, any objectionable flavor or odor, or any other means

    Canada No. 1 Extra Light (formerly grade AA): Produced at the very beginning of the season, very pale color and delicate taste. Light Transmittance over 75%. (U.S. Grade A Light Amber/Fancy)

    Canada No. 1 Light (formerly grade A): Produced at the beginning of the season in mid March. Pale amber in color with a pure, subtle flavor. Light Transmittance 61-74%. (U.S. Grade A Medium Amber)

    Canada No. 1 Medium (formerly grade B): Produced in the middle of the season this is the most popular grade available. A rich amber color and more pronounced flavor. Light Transmittance 44-60%. (U.S. Grade A Dark Amber)

    Canada No. 2 Amber (formerly grade C): Produced near the end of the season, it contains a higher mineral content, stronger maple taste and dark color. Recommended for cooking or those who prefer a stronger taste. Light Transmittance 27-43%. (U.S. Grade B Commercial)

    II. Canada No. 3 Dark (formerly grade D): Produced at the very end of the season, it has the highest mineral content. This is very dark, full flavored syrup often used as an ingredient in cereals and baked goods. Light Transmittance 0-26%. (U.S. Grade B Commercial)
