View Full Version : People recovering from surgery should NOT do MC
Peter

The body requires much more protein when it is healing from surgery or otherwise rebuilding flesh. Therefore, until a person is recovered, she or he should not do the Master cleanse.

Hi, I will soon begin my the MC. I'm just trying to make sure I pick a good two weeks! This Monday I am going to have two of my wisdom teeth pulled on either side of my mouth. Since I won't be able to eat much of anything, I was thinking of starting the MC. Could someone tell me if this is a good or bad idea? I'm not sure if the dentist is giving me pain killers or not. Does that make a difference?

I had ankle surgery in January of this year and need to have a very minor follow up surgery (about a 1 inch incision, to remove a screw in my ankle) in a couple of weeks and I would love to try the Master Cleanse, but am curious if anyone has any advice on how long I should wait after surgery to do so.
I will of course be asking my surgeon about this, but wanted advice in advance from those actually familiar with it.

Hey, Grey. I don't mean to flout any advice given here, but a one-inch incision probably isn't too much to worry about. You obviously aren't going to have muscles or deep tissue trying to rebound from trauma. I had hernia surgery about two weeks before I began the cleanse; I made sure my incision (not laparoscopic -- it's about 3 inches long) was well on its way to healing, and then began. The cleanse actually seemed to speed recovery, in my case -- swelling subsided, etc. I think if you are feeling strong and like you are past the primary stage of healing, you could start the cleanse with no ill (and perhaps positive!) effects. If you have a post-surgery check-in with your doctor after two weeks or so, that might be a reasonable start-date goal. Good luck!

Thank you so much for such a quick reply. It's so great to find people who can give such helpful advice and insight.
I was also thinking the 2 week mark after would be a good time. I still have problems with swelling from the first surgery if I am on my feet for too long, so I am really hoping that doing the cleanse after will help in the healing of the initial surgery as well as the second and clear up any left over swelling.
btw.. I think it was your live journal blog that I first read that contained your experience on the cleanse, I even bookmarked it and plan on continuing to read. It was very inspiring and made the cleanse seem to be quite an attainable challenge. Thank you. :-)

What about before surgery?
I'm on Day 4 of the MC and I have surgery scheduled a week from tomorrow.

hi, i just started the cleanse yesterday after a laproscopy i had done last week (wed.) it has now been a week since the surgery and day 2 of the cleanse, so you can imagine my surprise as i'm reading that i should not be cleansing since i just had surgery. ironically i feel much better on the cleanse, in the days following the surgery i felt drained, dizzy, and very tired although i was eating. since starting the mc yesterday, i've been more awake and have had more energy, should i come off the mc? does the type of surgery you have make a difference? HELP!?!?!

Peter: How long should one wait after surgery before doing the MC. My daughter is having a toncilectomy and she would like to do the cleanse after that. When is it safe for her?
Thanks,

Hello! I wanted to start MC pretty soon but I had a missed miscarriage at 15 weeks and had to have a D&C. It will be one month tommorrow and I was curious as to whether I could go ahead and start the MC or would it be better to wait until my menstrual cycle resumed? I feel the need to cleanse my body before trying to get pregnant again.
Thanks!!

I had a breast enlargement 7 weeks ago....when am I safe to do the Master Cleanse??? I really want to do it cos I put on 20lbs in a very unhealthy manner in order to be big enough to have surgery...I feel like a dumping ground on the inside and need to cleanse. I have fasted in the past.

BeautifulFreak, seeing that it's so close to your surgery i would actually recommend you wait a little bit. Maybe another month or so. You really don't know how your body will react to the implants at this point so it might be best to wait a while until your body is more used to them.
In the mean time, you can take steps to start losing weight and detoxing like working out, going vegetarian or vegan, going raw, and incorporating green smoothies into your diet. you can find info on this stuff in the general help for newbies thread and even more info by using google as well.

As pb says, you might try a more gentle and gradual detox. I read a book recently called something like The Raw Foods Detox Diet and it made a LOT of sense to me.
Main thing is: listen to your body. If it is telling you to detox, then do it.

I had a breast lumpectomy for some suspicious tissue (not cancer) on Wednesday. It's Sunday. I'd like to start the cleanse. My breast is swollen -- typical recovery process -- and there is some blood accumulation at the bottom of my breast. I'm able to lay on my stomach for a little while now. It's sore to the touch. I was doing pain meds, but have pretty much cut them out. No muscle was cut. My arm movements are fine.
I'm 50. I've been pretty much a vegetarian for a couple of years. Still have weight 10 pounds to lose. Am at home now and this is a good time to do this.
Should I wait? Or would this help the recovery?

I am currently on day 21 and have surgery scheduled on day 30. I was hoping to go 30+ days this time. The surgery is to put in a PV sling. It's not a real major surgery, but they'll be making several incisions to get the job done... is it OK to stay on the MC during and for a few days after?
If it makes a difference.... this is my 3rd MC and I am actually underweight right now. I started at 150 in Feb this year with a target goal of 135. I got down there fairly easily and have just kept dropping. (I continued to eat very well after each MC) But now I'm down to 117 and am almost concerned. I'm 5' 6" and fairly muscular. Will this have an impact on healing after my surgery?
Thanks so much for any input. My inclination is to stay on it, obviously not to lose more weight, but to detox at a deeper level, but I'd like to hear from people who have much more experience.

Kimberly,
I would say, "No" to the cleanse during/after surgery as stated here. Your body *needs* nutrition to heal. Consider an all Organic diet.
To quote our Fearless Leader: :)
The body requires much more protein when it is healing from surgery or otherwise rebuilding flesh. Therefore, until a person is recovered, she or he should not do the Master cleanse.

Thanks for the advise Res. If I can ask for more specific input... you think it's OK to stay on MC until the day of surgery, then go right into a all raw diet for a week or so? Since I already made it to day 21, I hate to quit any sooner than I have to.

kimberlyn: As someone who worked 20 years in health care before switching careers, I would like to put in my 2 cents. I recommend that you stop the cleanse within the next day or two to give your body time to adjust to eating before your surgery. You can always do another MC!
Part of the whole MC process is making sure you take care of yourself, and sometimes that means stopping the cleanse before you have scheduled yourself to. Best of luck with both your MC and your surgery!

Yup, I agree with Ann. Your body would still be in detox mode which you don't want when you have surgery.
All the best to you Kimberly. :)

Ann and Res, thank you so much for your advice. I sure would like to hear some input from you again. I took your advice and here's where I'm at today:
I broke my fast last week Monday (day 22) to prepare for surgery which was exactly one week later. During that week, I ate almost entirely raw and it was a wonderful experience for me! Only 2 times did I eat something I shouldn't have, and boy did I pay for it. I had terrible stomach aches for several hours. It was like my body was saying, get this out of me! I don't want this in here!!! Anyway, I needed less sleep, I had 2-3 great eliminations each day. I didn't have my typical chronic fatigue. It was a dynamic week! Then comes the surgery. They made me take some pills before the surgery, one of them an antibiotic. I've had to continue taking antibiotics and a couple pain pills. By yesterday, I was experiencing horrible constipation (which is not nice when you've had surgery on your bladder!) I actually had to give myself an enema to get some relief! And of course I'm very tired again from recovering from surgery. I only need to take the antibiotic for 3 more days, then I'm done. I guess I would just like to hear that this is all OK and normal.... that my body will go back to it's blissful experience of the week before my surgery. Or will I need to do another MC to get all the junk from the medication cleared out? I wasn't planning to do another MC until November... any input?

Hi Kimberly: :) Now's the time to take really good care of yourself. Don't be in a hurry to cleanse again. If you're not already doing this, start drinking Green Smoothies daily. After you finish taking anti-biotics, start taking Probiotics. Build up your strength and nourish yourself. Another cleanse would be too taxing on your body right now - (in my opinion).
I hope you feel better soon. :)

Sounds great Res, thank you. I did a little searching here looking for green smoothies, and decided I'm probably already doing the right thing. It's called green lemonade. Have you heard of it? Here's the recipe:
Green Lemonade
Makes 1 serving
1 head romaine lettuce or celery
5 – 6 stalks kale (any type)
1 to 2 apples (any kind, organic Fuji recommended)
1 whole organic lemon (you don’t have to peel)
1 – 2 inches fresh ginger (optional)
Process the vegetables in a juicer. Pour into a large glass, and drink. (You may use any greens in place of the romaine and kale – like celery, chard, collards, spinach, cucumber and so forth)

hello :) i have a question regarding injuries. i have a back strain that i am dealing with and am not working out and am seeing a physical therapist. my doctor says it's okay to stay on the cleanse so i am going to. but my chiropractor said i should be taking omega-3's to assist with inflammation. when should i take them? i am thinking right in the middle of the day- after the SWF and way before the lax tea. i obviously cannot take the meds they prescribed- which i probably wouldn't do anyhow as i am not into drugs- because they need to be taken with food. but omega-3's can be taken with or without food. any advice would be much appreciated :)

Kimberlyh,
Your drink sounds good.
One benefit (IMO) of smoothies over juice, though, is that you get the full benefit of all the fiber, and not so much of the sugars.

Hi All,
Im about 4 weeks post first cleanse. I had Orthoscopic appedix surgery yesterday. I was thinking of startin another cleanse on monday, any concerns I should have? I really appreciate if Peter would post something for me. I got sooo much out of the last cleanse and cant wait for the next. The detoxes are so worth it. I may seem weird but I cant believe I like seeing how much comes out when I have BM'S. I guess its that instant gratification of seeeing the work in progress.Any and all replies are always a blessing for me. Thanks all. God bless.....Matty

i figured i would post this in this one...
so i am going to have a dental appointment coming up-
i'm most likely going to be shot up in my mouth with novocaine or whatever they use now.
it usually makes me feel kinda weird to begin with.
i am almost on day 5 now and want to obviously continue for a while....
will this shot o' novocaine affect me? i mean, am i safe to continue the cleanse?
thanks.

Well, I'm not a doctor but with common sense I would say the follwing: Novocaine is "only" a temporarly pain killer, not a medicine to heal the body, I don't think it would be a problem to get it, your body will cleanse its residue out during the fast. I would recommend though to drink a big glass of lemonade with a bit of an extra maple syrup before the dentist visit to be sure you'll be strong enough and won't get dizzy. If they do teeth extraction, surgery, or anything what hurt the gum then you should wait with the clease until it properly heals.
I personally hate the novocaine's after effect so much that I rather handle the little pain of drilling then being numb for the whole day! 8)
Good luck!
dersertintheshape
May 2nd, 2008, 02:12 PM
yeah, the novocaine just makes my heart beat fast and sort of dizzy (in a "i don't like this" sort of way)...
i will at least have time to go 14 days so we'll see. if i wanted to push for the 21 it would run into the end of that...thanks for the info.

As long as you can tolerate the cayenne, I would think it would be all right.
You probably won't be able to do the SWF. (Can you drink a quart of liquid at once?) If not, then you would need to do the laxative tea both evening and morning.
Good luck and be sure to let us know how you fare! I think this question has come up before, but I don't recall anyone responding from experience.

Not TOTALLY on topic, but newbies can't make new threads and this is the closest.
I have been dealing with allergies and trying medicines to help out for about a month. The other day, I started getting worse symptoms of sickness: sore throat, coughing, etc.
Is this a bad time to start the MC?
Additional thoughts: I stopped taking the medicines. I'm worried that my body will be busy repairing my other illness and not using as much energy to cleanse. My throat hurts like a bastard right now, but I don't want to even take Tylenol for fear that I'm not getting the most out of MC.
Anyone have thoughts on this?
Thanks.

I am on the end of day three of my first Master Cleanse.
I am scheduled to have gum surgery to repair gum depletion on the front of my two bottom teeth July 10. I am doing a twelve day cleanse and so I will be finished with the cleanse July 9 counting the three days of eating correctly to come off the cleanse.
I am thinking of moving the surgery; actually, I am hoping to see some improvement and avoid the surgery!!
Regardless, I would hate the thought of going directly under anesthesia after my cleanse.
Do you have any suggestions?
Is there another reason I should move up the surgery to a later date...IF I decide to go ahead with it, that is.

Is there a recommended time to be off the cleanse before surgery? Also, does the cleanse mess up the pre-surgery blood work? I was told to come in next week, when it will be day 9 for me. They said don't worry, it is a non-fasting bloodwork. I kind of laughed.
Thanks,

I am on the second day of my second master cleanse.
My first went very well. On Day 9 of the first MC, I felt so good I was able to play pick-up bball non-stop for about 2.5 hours.
The reason I stopped? I BROKE my finger.
So, I had surgery. This was about 3.5 months ago. My finger is not fully back to normal. I still have therapy, and I get only about 50% flexion. It doesn't straighten either.
Should I stop this MC, or am I OK to keep going?

Hi
I am on my 2nd day of the cleanse and going from calm to hungry anxiousness at various times throughout the day but I do want to see this through.
However, now I have a question. I am post hip surgery by almost 5 months and wonder whether it is okay for me to have have started the cleanse already in terms of the body being able to heal and recover. I also have low level lupus. Is now a good time to start?
I am a 43 year old female, 5 ft 6 and about 130lbs.
Thank you

I too had the lap surg right after coming off the cleanse. I lost 26lbs in 10 days doctors said that was too much loss in a short time caused my gallbladder problem apparent. Before the cleanse I didn't even notice any gallbladder symptoms. I had an attack when i returned to eating normal got nauseated started throwing up it didn't stop was rushed to emergency had an emergency laproscopy. I read something about the gallbladder in the cleanse book but didn't pay much attention because I've never been sick. The only time I've been to a hospital was to have kids(3). Now I'm scared to do the cleanse again. Are there any other side effects or problems that could occur?

I haven't had any problems, I am on day 5. On April 9th I had arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder. I started the fast on April 19th. My cuts are healing, no problems at all as far as I can see. I had this same surgery 2 years ago, and the recovery experience is the same, and I was not detoxing then. But I suppose everyone and every surgery is different.

I think the recommended time to wait is until your scars have healed. Whilst you are probably still healing inside, I would say to crack right on with the MC!

Hi, I am new to this site. I am on day 7 of my Master Cleanse. I didn't realize I would be needing a surgery when I started, but here it is. I can't put it off. I knew I had a lump in my breast, and that was part of the reason I went on the cleanse. The doctor's were taking their sweet time getting around to me and I thought I would have plenty of time. As it is, the surgery is scheduled for day 9 of my cleanse. I guess my question is, I'd better wean off right? Is there a faster way for me to do that so I can start including more protien? Please answer soon. I need to know right away. I've loved the Master Cleanse so far, and I'm really disappointed I'll have to stop right before the best cleansing happens.:(

Closet I have no scientific proof of anything - only my gut feelings that if I were in your shoes I would continue. I can make arguments against my opinion,
I can see reasons to wean, but at the same time I'd want to be in the very most ready state for my surgery, so I would keep going. -IF- it were me.

I suggest that if you undergone surgeries or related stuff, you must consult your personal physician about taking up MC. If he or she gives you the go signal, then go. It's the best way or safest way I could think of. Hope this helps.

Recently I met with an accident and doctor suggested me that I should not consume MC supplement or program. It is dangerous to health. In some MC it contains additives which causes harm to your body. So avoid MC as much as you can if you have recovered from any kind of surgery.

Well i think while recovering from a surgery, your body is struggling to heal the wounds. Taking MC during that would only put extra burden of detoxing as well as healing. If you've had deep wounds from surgery then it's best to take proper nutrients and help your body to speed up the healing process then you can do MC a few weeks later :)
